Master Jason Gervais has over 22 years of Martial Arts experience and is a member of the respected Black Belt Bureau. He has a variety of solid training that includes time with seven Master Instructors and from them gleaned a wealth of understanding and mastery of a plethora of styles. Master Gervais holds black belt rank in three disciplines: Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido and Judo. He has also studied the art of Jeet Kune Do and studied Kickboxing technique.

In the same year that Kerri Strugg was winning the gymnastics gold medal with a broken leg in the Summer Olympics, Master Gervais was winning the Championship in the Open Karate Fighting Championship, also with a broken leg.

The following year in 1997, Master Gervais joined the toughest and most disciplined branch of the military: the United States Marine Corps. During his five years in the Marine Corps, from which he was honorably discharged in the rank of Corporal, he embraced the stern discipline and the unshakable pride that comes from the training he received. Even though he received the toughest training in the United States, he still maintained an element in Martial Arts by training his fellow Marines. His time in the Marine Corps inspired him to adjust his curriculum to incorporate the discipline of the hardest Marine Corps boot camp into the training at Superior Martial Arts. There are very few schools in America today that have the strict discipline that SMA proudly holds as its foundational principle.

Master Gervais teaches his students the Martial way with practical yet powerful technique which evokes a confidence in his students in what they learn. When asked of his philosophy on the benefits of children and adults being involved in a serious, challenging Martial Arts program, Master Gervais had this to say: “I feel everyone needs insurance. Would you drive an automobile without [insurance]? That’s what Martial Arts is basically, except it is more ‘artistic’.” Master Gervais teaches his students with not only a genuine passion for teaching, but also a genuine concern for the wellbeing of his fellow man in the dangerous world that we live in. Master says, “The type of program you choose is important. Too many instructors are teaching the wrong stuff and giving people false hope.” This false hope comes from students not being given a practical arsenal of defense techniques which they can apply in real life situations and execute what they have learned in a way that works for them. Master Gervais is known to repeatedly tell his students that when properly trained, if they are presented with a threat on the street, they will defend themselves using whatever technique they are most comfortable with. Therefore, the curriculum that he uses contains a LOT of material for each student to master and remember. Though it is difficult, Master Gervais promises, “If I can do this, YOU can do this”.

Master Gervais is also passionate about making sure his students are physically fit to be an effective Martial Artist. “The benefits of a good martial arts program is not only rewarding but can also offer good health to those who might not otherwise be in the greatest shape. Total mind and body go hand in hand with fitness. If you do not have one then you cannot have the other. I try to give both to my students with their current training program. How [one accomplishes this] is another question. The foundation is discipline and that is something SMA prides itself on!!”

Today, Master Gervais not only teaches Martial Arts but he is also active in his Church and in his community and is currently pursuing a law degree. That’s right… SMA is not his livelihood. SMA is his passion. Teaching is his passion and for ten years he has taught on both coasts of this country and does not see himself slowing down anytime in the near future. On several occasions Master Gervais has repeated his mission statement, “I will teach to anyone who wants to learn. If there is just one student that wants to learn, I will teach that one student.”
